Your first three to six months at your new job can be a tough one, both nerve wracking and confusing as you get to grips with your new company.

However, it’s probably one of the most important parts of your role as you begin to showcase everything that’s on your CV and all that’s been said in your interview.

The following pieces of advice look at how to make the best impression in the early stages of your new position.

1. Be Punctual

Attend meetings on time, and ensure you are prepared and taking part where you can. If you have to be at work for 8:30, try getting there 10-15 minutes before to set yourself up for the day.

2. Be Positive

Being new means you won’t always understand what’s going on, but staying positive gives the impression that you are keen to learn.
Avoid office politics or knocking others. Ignore the negatives of any goings on, and stick to the tasks that you are given.

3. Be Impressive

There’s a reason they hired you. Think about the attributes that they were impressed with during your interview, and bring this in to your work.

4. Be Aware

Think about the value you are bringing to the business, in each task you that are given. This helps your manager to know that you are interested in reaching the overall objectives of the company.
Listen intently to what’s going on, and talk to people around you to get a good idea of the workflow and ethics that are portrayed within the business.

5. Be Active

Stay active and be hands-on. If you don’t feel like you are busy enough, ask if there is anything else you can do. If there is something you feel you could improve on, don’t hesitate to ask for feedback or training.

6. Be Sociable

Get to know people from different areas of the organization, and look to get involved in any social activities going on internally and externally.
Creating good relationships with your boss and colleagues early on sets you in good stead, and can lead to a great start in the new job.

7. Be Smart

Dress for the role. If you’re in a corporate office and everyone else is in suits; wear your best office attire. The way you look is an important part of your new position, as is your body language and the way you conduct yourself.

Remember, you only get one chance to make a good first impression, so give your new role all that you have to show that the business has made the right decisions.
Of course, you are learning new elements of the business each and every day so mistakes will be made, however it remains important to show a great attitude and willingness to be a part of the company.
